Saltillo Tiles

My Tile Backsplash selection of Saltillo tiles are authentic handmade Saltillo from Mexico. Carefully made by hand since 1577 in the Saltillo region of Mexico, these tiles are made from clay found only in this area of the world, shaped by hand and die, dried outdoors and fired in kilns for more than a day. The beauty of Saltillo tiles is found in the natural variation from tile to tile. This tile is sealed with an oil based sealer. For use indoors on walls as a backsplash and countertop or as a floor insert.

This product has been made for generation by the Tlaxcaltecas artisans since 1577 from Saltillo Coah, Mexico. This is the genuine article, beautiful, distinctive, and authentic. These clays only exist in Saltillo, what is called Tierra Rica and will be found in no other place on earth. This product is made by hand, as the clay dries for the next 6 to 8 hours in the hot Saltillo sun, the occasional chicken or dog can pass by and leave their foot prints in a few of the tiles. Should you find one or two tiles it is the assurance you are getting the authentic Saltillo tile. These tiles are then fired in our kiln for 36 hours at a high temperature, then cooled down for another 36 hours. Then the best tiles are selected, and the less than perfect tile removed, so you can get the gorgeous product, which we call the perfect, imperfect tile. These are the characteristics on the authentic Saltillo tile, hand pressed, chipped, uneven, color varies from tile to tile, small pores or fading, and small cracks.
